Shelby County Probation is compromised of 13 Probation Officers, 1 shared Field Officer, Intake Officer, Office Manager, ADA Secretary, and Receptionist.
Each Probation Officer has met the minimum qualifications and has received a Probation Officer Certification. Each Probation Officer must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university, complete the Indiana Office of Court Services new probation officer orientation, and pass the Indiana Office of Court Services Probation Exam. Each Probation Officer receives continued education every year with the Indiana Office of Court Services’ Probation Officer Annual Conference. Each Probation Officer is trained in Evidence Based Practices, Motivational Interviewing, Carey Guides, suicide prevention screeners, and IYAS/IRAS.
Shelby County Probation utilizes the Indiana Risk Assessment System (IRAS) for adults and the Indiana Youth Assessment System (IYAS) for juveniles. These assessments determine a probationer’s risk of re-offending and criminogenic areas to work on. These assessments will help when case planning and using Evidence-Based Practices interventions. Shelby County Probation has contact standards in place based on the probationer’s risk and needs level. Shelby County Probation uses an in-house incentive and sanction matrix for supervision as part of our Evidence Based Practices.
Shelby County Probation also operates the Shelby County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program (SCADAP) in accordance with IC 12-23-14 and the Judicial Conference of Indiana Rules for Court and Alcohol Drug Programs. Probation Officers who are certified will perform drug and alcohol assessments on cases ordered by the court or referred by another agency (Prosecutor’s Office/Community Corrections/etc) to assess the severity of substance abuse and refer to appropriate treatment programs. The assessment is case managed until successful completion of treatment.
Shelby County Probation also utilizes our shared field officer with Community Corrections and local law enforcement to complete searches of probationers to ensure the safety of the community, compliance of supervision, and to remove illegal substances from the community.
Shelby County Probation and Shelby County Community Corrections work together to effectively transition supervision of cases between the agencies with efficient communication. Both agencies meet together regularly for collaboration and trainings.
